Maldives under-23 football team had won Bronze medal in the 11th South Asian Games 2010 carrying on Dhaka, after beating India 3 – 1 in the penalty shoot-out.
Maldives dominated the full game and created countless chances to score goals but none of the effort from Maldives was succeed as the match ends in goalless.
Mukhthar, Aduham and Nashid missed clear chances to score goals in the game and in one Ibrahim’s header was denied by the cross bar in the later stage of the game before Ashfaag saw his powerful free kick hit the cross bar.
After 90 minutes of play Referee whistled for the Penalty Shoot-Out where Maldives keeper Faisal saved 1 penalty kick of India while 2 penalties were kicked wide by Indian junior team.
Kicking it wide Shamweel missed the first penalty of Maldives, but Umair, Ibrahim (Ibbe) and Aduham hit the target for Maldives to win the bronze.
Maldives played total 5 matches in this tournament and manage 2 lone goal wins in group stage against Nepal and Bhutan. Maldives lost the group stage match against hosts Bangladesh 0 – 1 and Afghanistan’s stunning 1 – 0 win over Maldives, fired all the plans of Maldives for the Gold.
This was the third time Maldives had gone for penalty shoot-out in Bangabandhu Stadium and this is the only time Maldives had survived without a defeat from penalty shoot out in this stadium as in, 2003 Maldives loosed to Bangladesh in the final of SAFF Championship 2003 and last year in the same stadium India beats Maldives in Penalty shoot-out (in SAFF Championship 2009).
